Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Announces Future Vision for Powdered Rice

The government has stepped up efforts to strengthen public-private cooperation to revitalize the powdered rice industry. On the 27th, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will hold the 'Powdered Rice Future Vision Proclamation Ceremony' at the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (aT) Center under the theme "The Future of Agriculture and Food Opened by Powdered Rice! Protecting Our Food Sovereignty with Powdered Rice!"

At this event, the Ministry will highlight the value and potential of powdered rice as a food ingredient and present a future vision for creating an ecosystem for the powdered rice industry to support new challenges in agriculture and the food industry. The proclamation ceremony will also include the launch of powdered rice research and product development projects, along with a symposium to promote the powdered rice industry. About 150 people, including food companies and farmers, will attend.

A Ministry official explained, "The Yoon Seok-yeol administration has set strengthening food sovereignty as a national agenda and is promoting the activation of powdered rice as a key means to achieve this goal. Powdered rice refers to rice varieties suitable for milling into powder, which can be diversely used as new domestic food ingredients in line with changing food consumption cultures, such as noodles and bread, which are popular among our people."

Accordingly, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will support the development of new powdered rice products in the food industry starting this year. Since January, food companies interested in developing powdered rice products have been recruited, and after a rigorous screening process, 19 products from 15 food companies were selected. By the end of the year, prototype development and consumer evaluations will be conducted for products such as ramen, kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), bread, snacks, and frying powder made from powdered rice.

Additionally, to increase the utilization of powdered rice raw materials, two research and development projects will be pursued: "Utilization of Low-Sugar Rice Powder" and "Development of Technology to Delay Rice Aging." Food companies plan to commercialize and productize the technologies developed in each project.

The Ministry plans to promote the industrialization of powdered rice foods focusing on mass-consumption products through the product development project, while continuously pursuing stable powdered rice production.
