40-Year-Old Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for Killing Mother During Seol Holiday
A son in his 40s who killed his mother with a blunt weapon during the Lunar New Year holiday was sentenced to a heavy prison term.
The 13th Criminal Division of the Gwangju District Court (Presiding Judge Jeong Young-ha) sentenced A (44), who was arrested and indicted on charges of killing a direct ascendant, to 15 years in prison on the 26th.
A was charged with beating his mother in her 60s to death with a blunt weapon at his home in Buk-gu, Gwangju, around 1 a.m. on January 21.
A was found to have suffered from a mental illness but had not taken medication for a long time and reported hallucinations.
He stated that "he was scared because his mother appeared as a monster."
After the crime, A stayed at home, and was caught when his younger sibling, who came to visit for the holiday, discovered the mother's body and reported it to the police.

The court said, "A committed the crime against his mother, which is a serious offense," adding, "However, considering his mental disorder and the fact that the bereaved sibling requested leniency, the sentence was determined."
