20s Mother Who Abandoned 3-Day-Old Son by Lakeside Charged with Attempted Murder
A woman in her 20s who abandoned her 3-day-old son by a lakeside while visiting Gangwon-do with her boyfriend has been charged with attempted murder.
The Incheon District Prosecutors' Office's Women and Children Crime Investigation Division (Chief Prosecutor Gumiok) announced on the 26th that Ms. A (23) was arrested and indicted on charges of attempted murder.
Ms. A is accused of abandoning her 3-day-old son, Mr. B, in a forest near a lakeside trail in Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do, on January 20th, with the intent to kill him.
At the time, Ms. A, who lived in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, had gone on a trip to Gangwon-do with her boyfriend and committed the crime after giving birth to her son at a hospital.
The Goseong Police Station initially booked Ms. A without detention on charges of attempted infanticide and transferred the case, but the prosecution, after supplementary investigation, considered the seriousness of the case and her lack of remorse and directly detained her.
Subsequently, the prosecution determined that the crime was not committed impulsively due to a distressed state immediately after childbirth and applied the charge of general attempted murder, which carries a heavier sentence than attempted infanticide, to Ms. A.
After the incident, Ms. A moved to Incheon, resulting in the case being transferred from the Chuncheon District Prosecutors' Office Sokcho Branch to the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office.
