High-Precision Road Maps Required for Autonomous Driving Now Support General National Roads
The National Geographic Information Institute of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that it has completed the construction of high-precision road maps, a core infrastructure for autonomous driving, targeting nationwide expressways and general national roads, and after a platform service preparation period, will provide them free of charge to companies and the public starting from the 27th.
Through this, it is expected to improve the safety of autonomous vehicles using expressways and general national roads and to be utilized as a key infrastructure in the era of autonomous driving.
High-precision road maps are highly accurate electronic maps that implement lanes, signs, and road facilities as digital twins of roads, enabling vehicle position determination at the lane level and supporting autonomous driving. They are used not only for autonomous driving but also for high-precision navigation, ADAS, and can be utilized for managing road facilities.
Additionally, the data structure of the high-precision road maps has been improved to enable use in simulations, and they will be provided for some sections of the Pangyo autonomous driving pilot zone.
The government plans to complete the construction of high-precision road maps for urban and major roads in line with the schedule for the commercialization of fully autonomous driving by 2027, and starting this year, will begin construction for special metropolitan cities and local roads in the Seoul metropolitan area, expanding the scope to the Chungcheong, Gyeongsang, and Jeolla regions.
