Samsung SDI and GM to Pursue Battery Joint Venture... Strengthening Korea-US 'Technology Alliance' (Comprehensive)
Establishment of a 30GWh Annual Capacity Factory in Yangsan by 2026
"Last Year, Yoon Seok-yeol and Biden Mentioned the 'Development of the Korea-US Alliance'
This Cooperation Materializes It... All Stakeholders 'Win-Win'"
Samsung SDI is establishing an electric vehicle battery joint venture in the United States with General Motors (hereinafter GM).
On the 25th, Samsung SDI announced that it plans to invest more than $3 billion (approximately 4 trillion KRW) to build a factory with an annual production capacity of over 30 GWh, targeting mass production in 2026. Through this, Samsung SDI will secure GM as a new customer and strengthen its penetration into the U.S. market by establishing its second battery production base in the United States.
The joint venture will produce high-performance high-nickel prismatic and cylindrical batteries, which are expected to be fully equipped in GM electric vehicles to be launched in the future. The establishment of this joint venture is expected to create thousands of jobs. The location and workforce size of the joint venture have not yet been decided.

The announcement of the electric vehicle battery joint venture between Samsung SDI and GM symbolically shows how the ROK-U.S. alliance is evolving beyond its traditional military and security focus into an advanced technology and supply chain alliance. It is seen as a concrete example of the 'advancement of the ROK-U.S. alliance' highlighted by the two countries' leaders last year, materialized through the cooperation between Samsung SDI and GM on the 70th anniversary of the ROK-U.S. alliance.
In May last year, President Yoon Suk-yeol and President Biden visited Samsung Electronics’ Pyeongtaek campus, the world’s largest semiconductor factory, and delivered a message urging to develop the ROK-U.S. alliance beyond military and security to an alliance based on advanced technology and supply chains. At that time, President Yoon said, "I hope the ROK-U.S. relationship will be reborn as an economic security alliance based on advanced technology and supply chain cooperation," and President Biden said, "The two countries will advance further when they work together as a technology alliance for economic security cooperation."
An industry official said, "The announcement of the electric vehicle battery joint venture between Samsung SDI and GM during the historic visit to the U.S. commemorating the 70th anniversary of the ROK-U.S. alliance carries a message that the bilateral relationship as a 'technology alliance' is becoming stronger beyond simple cooperation between large corporations."
All Stakeholders 'Win-Win'
It is also expected to provide new opportunities to various stakeholders in both Korea and the U.S., creating a foundation for a 'win-win' outcome. An industry official said, "With the establishment of this joint venture, domestic partner companies will expand their entry into the U.S., laying the groundwork for the globalization of Korea’s small and medium-sized enterprises in materials, parts, and equipment."
Although Samsung SDI is establishing the joint venture in the U.S., it is known that it plans to build a 'mother factory' and core material research facilities domestically to strengthen next-generation battery technology research and mass production systems. The 'mother factory' is a 'global standard factory' and 'core production base' that proactively develops and applies advanced production technologies and key processes, which are then disseminated to overseas production plants. Overseas factories focus on producing products tailored to local markets, while the mother factory in Korea aims to cultivate advanced capabilities.
Choi Yoon-ho, CEO of Samsung SDI, said, "We are pleased to take the first step in a long-term strategic partnership with GM to lead the electric vehicle market," adding, "We will do our best to supply products with the highest safety and quality using the best technology to help GM strengthen its leadership in the electric vehicle market."

Mary Barra, Chairwoman of GM, said, "The core of GM’s electric vehicle supply chain strategy is to pioneer the future based on scalability, resilience, sustainability, and cost competitiveness, and I believe that cooperation with Samsung SDI will achieve all of these," adding, "By manufacturing cells together with Samsung SDI, we will enhance the production capacity of over one million electric vehicles annually in North America."
