Regarding South Korea's Ammunition Support to Ukraine... White House Says "Any Support Is Welcome"
Regarding South Korea's potential ammunition support for Ukraine, which is under Russian invasion, the White House stated on the 25th (local time) that "any additional support South Korea can provide to Ukraine is welcome." It did not comment on whether President Yoon Suk-yeol, who is on a state visit to the United States, and U.S. President Joe Biden would discuss this matter during their summit.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a briefing that day, in response to a question asking if President Biden would request ammunition support for Ukraine from President Yoon Suk-yeol, that the U.S. welcomes any additional support South Korea can provide. President Yoon is scheduled to meet with President Biden at the White House on the 26th.
Earlier, President Yoon mentioned the possibility of conditional weapons support for Ukraine in a recent interview with Reuters. Attention is focused on whether specific details will emerge during this summit.
Press Secretary Jean-Pierre expressed gratitude for South Korea's measures, including support for sanctions and export controls against Russia, as well as non-lethal and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, stating, "South Korea has also taken steps to supplement the U.S.'s major ammunition supplies to Ukraine."
Regarding controversies over eavesdropping and confidential document leaks involving South Korea and other allies, she explained, "As we have said several times, U.S. officials have engaged more broadly at senior levels with allies and partners to protect information and reassure our commitment to the security partnership." She added, "Our commitment to South Korea remains strong and will continue to be so. We have engaged at senior levels with allies, including South Korea, on unauthorized leaks, and we take this issue very seriously."
