Gwangju City Announces Call for Candidate Sites for Resource Recovery Facility (Incineration)
Securing a Site of Over 66,000㎡ and Obtaining Consent from More Than 50% of Residents
Investing Over 100 Billion Won in the Location Area to Support Resident Convenience Facilities and More
Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kang Gi-jung) announced on the 25th that it has decided and announced the site selection plan for the installation of an eco-friendly resource recovery facility (incineration) with a capacity of 650 tons, and has begun the public recruitment process for candidate sites.
The resource recovery facility (incineration) is an essential infrastructure to prepare for the 2030 ban on direct landfill of combustible household waste and the principle of on-site treatment, as well as to strengthen Gwangju City's own treatment capacity. Since last year, Gwangju City has reviewed the facility plan through related service projects.
The candidate sites must secure a site area of at least 66,000㎡ (based on natural green area) and be located in areas not restricted by land use plans.
Applications can be made by autonomous districts, individuals, representatives of clans, or organizations that have obtained consent from more than 50% of the household heads registered within 300 meters from the boundary of the proposed site. Those wishing to participate in the public recruitment must submit the required documents in person to the Resource Circulation Division of Gwangju City by June 23.
Gwangju City plans to support more than 100 billion KRW to ensure resident acceptance in surrounding areas. Between 60 billion and 80 billion KRW will be invested to install benefit facilities, and an additional 50 billion KRW will be provided as special support for resident wish projects and grants to the hosting autonomous district.
Furthermore, if villages or other entities wishing to host the facility apply, Gwangju City plans to hold on-site briefing sessions and arrange visits to advanced facilities in other regions. This is to alleviate citizens' concerns through examples from other regions and to share information on the necessity and safety of the facility, thereby maximizing resident acceptance.
Gwangju City will form a site selection committee within the first half of the year and, based on the application results for candidate sites, will comprehensively consider feasibility studies, strategic environmental impact assessments, and other factors to select the final site through the committee.
Once the site is selected, a basic plan including benefit facilities will be established, and related administrative procedures such as design and construction will be sequentially carried out.
The details of the site selection plan decision and announcement can be found on Gwangju City's official website, and inquiries can be directed to the Resource Facilities Team of the Resource Circulation Division of Gwangju City.
