Dong-A University Student Choi Jaesung Wins 'Steel Challenge' Hosted by World Steel Association
Choi Jaesung, a student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Dong-A University, won first place in the Steel Manufacturing Competition (Steel Challenge) organized by the World Steel Association.
The World Steel Association (WSA) announced that Choi Jaesung won first place at the 17th Steel Challenge (Steel Manufacturing Competition) held on the 18th (local time) in Vienna, Austria.
Since 2005, the Steel Challenge has been held annually as a steel manufacturing simulation competition for steel engineers and metal major university students worldwide.
The competition ranks participants based on producing 1 ton of steel plate with the alloy composition specified by the organizers at the lowest cost within 24 hours using steel process simulation.
The competition saw 1,299 participants from 76 universities across 27 countries, with 254 participants from 20 universities in Korea, including Dong-A University.

View original imageTo participate in the Steel Challenge World Championship, one must win in regions such as the Americas, Europe, Asia, Oceania, or China. In January, Choi Jaesung achieved the best results in the East Asia region, which includes Korea, earning the right to compete in the world championship with winners from the five regions.
Choi Jaesung said, "I consider it a great honor to be selected as the winner of the student division at the World Steel Challenge," and added, "I am grateful to the organizers who provided a platform to demonstrate my abilities and to my school and department for their great support."
He continued, "I learned a lot during the preparation for the competition, and competing with students from around the world was a meaningful experience," adding, "I want to contribute to the development of the steel industry, which is innovating anew, by applying what I have learned and experienced."

In January, at the 17th East Asia Steel Challenge, Dong-A University achieved remarkable results with Choi Jaesung winning the grand prize, Lee Jaegun and Kim Taejun winning gold, Noh Juhwan winning silver, and Han Seunghoon and Jung Seongyun winning bronze, with a total of six students receiving awards.
