Will Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 5 Launch Early in July?... A Move to Counter Google
Google Pixel Fold Launch in May Accelerates Component Mass Production
Google Shifts Focus from OS to Hardware, Increasing Tension
Samsung Electronics is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 5 as early as July. Traditionally, the foldable series has been introduced in August. This move appears to be a strategy to raise the level of competition amid Google's entry into the foldable smartphone market.
Overseas IT media outlets such as SamMobile cited IT tipster Revegnus, reporting that Samsung Electronics could launch the Fold and Flip 5 in July. Revegnus stated, "Samsung usually begins mass production of foldable phone hinges at the end of June, but this year, production starts in early June," adding, "there is a possibility that the foldable series will be released in July this year."
SamMobile noted, "There is no definite evidence that Samsung will rush the release of the Fold and Flip 5 just because mass production started early," but also reported, "If Samsung wants to shorten the gap with the Google Pixel Fold and widen the gap with the iPhone 15 series, this is a valid strategy." PhoneArena mentioned the Google Pixel Fold and OnePlus V Fold and Flip, stating, "This is likely the reason Samsung is hurrying to release the Fold and Flip 5 quickly." Google is expected to unveil its first foldable smartphone, the Pixel Fold, at its annual developer conference (Google I/O) on May 10 and officially launch it in June.
The Fold and Flip 5 are expected to be equipped with the Galaxy-exclusive Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, which serves as the mobile application processor (AP), the brain of the smartphone. This is the same as the Galaxy S23. The Fold 5 is reportedly the first in the Galaxy series to apply a waterdrop-shaped hinge. When folded, the screen closes completely, eliminating the gap between the displays. The Flip 5 is expected to feature a larger 3.4-inch cover display compared to its predecessor.
Currently, the foldable smartphone market is dominated by Samsung Electronics. According to TrendForce, Samsung's market share in the foldable smartphone segment reached about 82% last year. However, Google's entry could bring significant changes to the market. Especially since most smartphone apps are not yet optimized for foldable displays, Google, with its strength in operating systems (OS), is expected to greatly improve user experience. This is why Samsung is advancing the mass production of key components and considering an early release.
Google, which has traditionally focused on software (SW) such as the Android OS, has recently been putting more effort into hardware (HW) like smartphones, creating tension in the Samsung-Google Android alliance. After launching the Pixel Watch smartwatch last October, Google surpassed Samsung to become the second-largest market share holder. A direct confrontation is expected in the foldable smartphone market following the smartwatch competition.

Recently, the New York Times reported that Samsung Electronics is considering changing the default search engine on Galaxy devices from Google to Microsoft's (MS) Bing, which is equipped with OpenAI's ChatGPT. Until now, Samsung has pre-installed Google as the default search app. If Samsung, the world's number one smartphone market share holder, switches from Google to MS, it would inevitably deal a blow to Google.
