Expressing 'My Body Is Me' Through 'Dance'

Artist Seo Hyun-ho lives in Gokseong-eup and is actively engaged in creative activities mainly in the Jeollanam-do and Gwangju areas.

This exhibition expresses various aspects and emotions of human life through the body using Seo Hyun-ho’s unique expressionist style characterized by intense colors and sensory forms.
Usually focusing on humans as subjects and dealing mainly with inner conflicts and anxieties of modern people, the artist presents about 20 works in this exhibition, including relatively large pieces made by joining canvases.
The theme of ‘dance,’ which frequently appears in Seo Hyun-ho’s works, remains central in this exhibition, but changes in form and content are also noteworthy.
The artist quotes Merleau-Ponty’s phrase “the body is me” and visualizes the energy of healthy solidarity through the free theme of ‘dance.’
Critic Yang Cho-rong says that for the artist, the body has always been a record intertwined with the events of his life.
Sometimes it reads as a denunciation of absurd reality, or as an expression of a will to understand the world more actively.
In addition, this exhibition features the artist’s recent works combining expressionist colors using collage with free and spontaneous drawings.
Small-sized human figure drawings are arranged on leftover canvas fabric pieces, and portraits with different atmospheres are placed on top, evoking memories of various life forms usually remembered through the body.
Seo Hyun-ho’s exhibition will also be held in his hometown Gokseong in June.
After completing his doctoral course in fine arts at Chosun University a few years ago, Seo Hyun-ho settled in his hometown Gokseong and has been pursuing a broad range of activities.
At an installation exhibition held at the Gokseong World Rose Festival venue, he attracted attention by painting portraits of local residents in a hanging format.
He also contributes to the development of local culture and arts by leading the Gokseong Drawing Club, which is becoming established and is planning its third exhibition this year.
