Gwangju Nam-gu Council Issues Statement Condemning Fukushima Contaminated Water Discharge into the Ocean
The Nam-gu Council of Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 21st that it issued a statement in the plenary session condemning the Japanese government's discharge of radioactive contaminated water from Fukushima into the ocean and demanding active response from the Yoon Seok-yeol administration.
The Nam-gu Council members stated in the declaration, "The Japanese government's decision to discharge radioactive contaminated water threatens the lives and safety of not only its own citizens but also those of neighboring countries and destroys the marine ecosystem."
They added, "The Fukushima contaminated water contains tritium and other substances harmful to the environment and human health, raising concerns among neighboring countries," and urged, "The Japanese government must transparently disclose all data and thoroughly conduct safety verification of the contaminated water with direct participation from South Korea and neighboring countries."
They continued, "Our government should not remain passive without demanding any suspension regarding Japan's contaminated water discharge issue, but must clearly convey the opposition of our citizens to the Japanese government."
