10 Million People with Salary Increase Last Year to Pay More Health Insurance in April... "Not a Uniform Health Insurance Premium Increase"
More than 10 million workplace subscribers whose wages and other compensation increased last year will have to pay higher health insurance premiums this month.
According to the National Health Insurance Service on the 21st, the April premiums for workplace subscribers will include the settlement premiums reflecting the 2022 wage changes. The Service had previously finalized the settlement amounts based on the 2022 wage changes for workplace subscribers and notified the workplaces.
The 10.11 million workplace subscribers whose wages increased will have to pay an additional average of 21,000 KRW per person per month (based on 10 installments). A health insurance official explained, "Only the difference from the calculated premium will be paid through the year-end settlement this year." Of course, the 3.01 million subscribers whose wages decreased will receive an average refund of 100,000 KRW per person. The 2.87 million subscribers with no wage changes will not undergo any settlement.
The year-end settlement of health insurance premiums for workplace subscribers has been conducted every April since 2000. It is an individual settlement applying the previous year's premium rate to the previous year's wage changes, deferring the payment of health insurance premiums due to wage changes until April of the following year. The total settlement amount for the 15.99 million workplace subscribers for income attributable to 2022 was 3.717 trillion KRW, an 11.8% increase compared to the previous year (3.3254 trillion KRW). This means that more workplace subscribers had wage increases compared to the previous year, so although not all workplace subscribers’ premiums uniformly increase, some feel like they have been hit with a "health insurance premium bomb" every April.

To reduce the burden on subscribers for the additional health insurance premiums, the National Health Insurance Service announced that it has expanded the number of installment payments from 5 to 10 times, the same as last year. If the additional amount is at least the monthly minimum premium amount (9,890 KRW as of 2023), installment payments are possible.
