Yeosu-si Launches Initiative to Create a 'Barrier-Free City'
Public Facility BF Certification, Improvement of Accessibility Facilities for Disabled People, etc.
Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) announced that it will create a "barrier-free city" through BF certification of public facilities and improvement of convenience facilities for the disabled.
‘BF (barrier free) certification’ is a certification system for a living environment without obstacles.
The city plans to mandate BF certification for 37 projects across 15 departments, conducting BF certification reviews from design to completion and issuing certification plaques.
Major BF certification projects include the construction of the City Museum and Children's Library, Yangjibareum Park, and tower-type parking lots. As of April, 52 facilities, including public facilities, have received BF certification.
In addition, to expand accessibility and mobility rights for the disabled, a field survey will be conducted on 1,903 convenience facilities in the region from May to October.
The results of the field survey will be used as basic data for expanding convenience facilities for the disabled, and improvement measures such as correction orders will be taken for buildings without installed convenience facilities for the disabled.
A city official said, “Through this project, we will break down the barriers of discrimination between disabled and non-disabled people and do our best to ensure that all citizens can enjoy a safe, comfortable, and free daily life.”
