‘I Saved the Earth Again Today!’ … Busan City Hosts the 15th Climate Change Week
April 21-27, Various Commemorative Events Held Under the Theme "Today, I Also Saved the Earth"
Earth Day Ceremony, Lights-Out Event (22nd), Carbon Neutral Lifestyle Practice Campaign (27th)
Busan City will operate the "15th Climate Change Week" from the 21st to the 27th in celebration of the "53rd Earth Day (4.22)" and will hold various commemorative events under the theme "Today, I Also Saved the Earth" during this period.
“Earth Day” was designated as April 22 every year to protect the global environment, following an oil spill accident that occurred in California, USA, in 1969.
Global commemorative events have been led by the private sector, and Korea has been operating Climate Change Week since 2009, promoting public awareness campaigns to commemorate it.
On the occasion of the 53rd Earth Day, the city will first hold a commemorative ceremony for the “53rd Earth Day” on the 19th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the 12th-floor International Conference Hall of City Hall.
The ceremony will consist of awards for contributors to greenhouse gas reduction attended by about 100 officials, a lecture titled “Today, My Practice Became a Star” by Kim Seung-hyun, CEO of Walden, and a climate crisis photo exhibition.
On April 22, from 8:00 p.m. to 8:10 p.m., the city will hold a 10-minute Earth Day lights-out event. This event will be participated in not only by public offices such as Busan City Hall and the National Police Agency but also by major landmarks including Busan Tower, Gwangandaegyo Bridge, Busanhangdaegyo Bridge, Nurimaru, the Busan Arts Center, and the Busan International Finance Center, all of which will turn off their lights simultaneously during this time.
On April 27 at 3 p.m., Busan Citizens Park will host various carbon-neutral lifestyle practice campaigns jointly organized by Busan City, the Busan Climate Environment Network, and Busanjin District.
Any citizen can participate, and it will be possible to sign up for the carbon-neutral points system on-site.

Lee Geun-hee, Director of the Environmental Policy Office of the city, said, “Through the 15th Climate Change Week held to mark the 53rd Earth Day, we expect to build a consensus on carbon neutrality and create an atmosphere for practicing carbon-neutral lifestyles in daily life.” He added, “We ask for the citizens’ great interest in the various commemorative events held during Climate Change Week, and especially, considering the significance of Earth Day, we kindly ask for active participation in the lights-out event even if it may be somewhat inconvenient.”
