Musk's TruthGPT... "AI Without Human Extinction"
Musk Announces Development of TruthGPT
"AI Understanding the Essence of the Universe" Emphasizes Safety
Foreign Media Predicts Development by Corporation 'X.AI'
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has officially entered the AI development race by announcing plans to develop a new artificial intelligence (AI) as a rival to OpenAI.
On the 17th (local time), Musk stated in an interview with Fox News, "We will start developing an AI called 'TruthGPT,' which seeks the ultimate truth as an attempt to understand the nature of the universe."
Musk explained, "TruthGPT is an AI interested in understanding the universe," adding, "Such an AI is less likely to cause human extinction, so it might be the safest path in terms of safety."
His emphasis that TruthGPT "will not destroy humanity" appears to be an attempt to differentiate it from existing AIs. Musk has long warned that AI could pose serious risks to humanity. Last month, he was among the signatories of an open letter from a U.S. nonprofit organization calling for a pause in the development of advanced AI systems.
In the interview, Musk reiterated the dangers of AI, stating that poorly designed AI could be more dangerous than malfunctioning aircraft or cars. He said, "Cutting-edge AI can write incredibly well and potentially manipulate public opinion," adding, "No matter how low the probability of that risk is, it could lead to the destruction of civilization."
At the same time, he expressed discomfort with OpenAI. Regarding OpenAI's partnership agreement with Microsoft for AI development, he criticized, "We really worked hard to build this organization (OpenAI) to compete against Google, but while I looked away for a moment, the technology was made public (due to the partnership)." Previously, Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 with Sam Altman and others but resigned from the board and sold all his investment shares due to conflicts of interest during AI research.
Musk did not elaborate on the development plans for 'TruthGPT.' However, major foreign media outlets such as The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report that the corporation 'X.AI,' established by Musk in Nevada on the 16th, is the company created for the newly developed AI.
