Tokyo Ohka Kogyo will invest 101 billion KRW in the Pyeongtaek Poseung (BIX) district to build an advanced manufacturing facility producing photoresist.
On the 18th (local time), Governor Kim signed an investment agreement with Taneichi Noriaki, CEO of Tokyo Ohka Kogyo, at the company's headquarters in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, regarding this investment.
Governor Kim said, "Photoresist is known to be highly technology-intensive and difficult to develop, but thanks to Tokyo Ohka Kogyo, we expect it to greatly contribute to stabilizing the domestic semiconductor supply chain. I am pleased that world-leading semiconductor companies are gathering in Gyeonggi Province, which houses research centers of the world's top 1st to 4th semiconductor equipment companies. We will actively support Tokyo Ohka Kogyo administratively so that it becomes a pillar of the semiconductor industry revival in Gyeonggi Province and that both sides can win together."
Taneichi Noriaki, CEO of Tokyo Ohka Kogyo, responded, "Investing in Pyeongtaek, where leading semiconductor companies in the world are gathered, reflects Tokyo Ohka Kogyo's intention to expand its business in South Korea and will also contribute to job creation and industrial development in Gyeonggi Province. We will make further efforts to ensure the planned investment proceeds smoothly. We ask for your continued support."
According to the agreement, Tokyo Ohka Kogyo will invest 101 billion KRW by 2027 to build a photoresist manufacturing facility on 55,560㎡ of industrial land in the Pyeongtaek Poseung (BIX) district of the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone. The project is expected to create 70 jobs.
The province plans to provide various administrative supports and resolve difficulties necessary for Tokyo Ohka Kogyo's investment.
Tokyo Ohka Kogyo is the world's largest photoresist manufacturer supplying Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, TSMC, Intel, and others, holding a 26% share of the global market. Photoresist is a core semiconductor material used to draw circuits on silicon wafers.
This investment agreement is expected to further strengthen the semiconductor ecosystem and contribute to stabilizing the semiconductor material supply chain.
The photoresist produced by Tokyo Ohka Kogyo is one of Japan's three major export-restricted items and remains difficult to localize, with a 77.4% dependence on Japan as of 2022. Although the Japanese government recently announced the lifting of export restrictions, considering potential future geopolitical risks, expanding production facilities in South Korea will have a significant effect on stabilizing the overall semiconductor industry supply chain.
