Naju-si Selected for 'Drainage Improvement Project' Led by Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs
Naju City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Yoon Byung-tae) announced on the 17th that the ‘Yeongsan District’ was selected as a basic survey district and the ‘Seji District’ as a newly initiated district for the 2023 Drainage Improvement Project led by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
Through the selection of the public contest project, Yeongsan District secured 12.4 billion KRW in national funds, and Seji District secured 15.7 billion KRW in national funds.
This project involves installing and improving drainage facilities such as new drainage pump stations, drainage channel maintenance, and reservoir dredging in lowland farmland areas that suffer from frequent flooding damage.
It is expected to contribute to stabilizing farm income by permanently preventing farmland flooding caused by heavy rainfalls concentrated in a short time due to localized heavy rain and climate change, and by establishing conditions for cultivating various horticultural crops.
The entire project is funded by the national budget, and the project entity is managed by the Korea Rural Community Corporation Naju Branch.
The basic survey district, Yeongsan District, is a lowland area prone to frequent flooding, where residents have continuously experienced inconvenience in farming due to flow obstruction caused by sediment and weeds in the drainage channels.
Also, the existing water channels are aging and have narrow cross-sections, resulting in high agricultural water loss and frequent farmland flooding damage due to insufficient drainage during rainfall.
Yeongsan District plans to expand and maintain one drainage pump station and 7.1 km of water supply and drainage channels over a beneficiary area of 154 hectares.
The newly initiated district, Seji District, will promote the construction of two drainage stations and one drainage gate, expansion and maintenance of 17.4 km of drainage channels, and covering (0.65 hectares) over a beneficiary area of 269 hectares.
Seji District is a disaster-prone area where natural drainage is difficult due to river backflow caused by the rise in water level of Manbongcheon Stream, which is higher than the water level in the drainage channels. It is expected that permanent preventive measures will be established through this project.
Mayor Yoon Byung-tae said, “Yeongsan and Seji Districts are large-scale, high-quality rice production complexes, but flooding damage during the rainy season has been frequent every year, causing great concern for farmers. We will do our best to minimize crop damage caused by natural disasters and establish a permanent and stable farming environment through prompt project implementation.”
