Increase in Detection of 'Acute' Rhinovirus and Bocavirus
"Be cautious of respiratory diseases during the changing seasons!"
The Ulsan City Health and Environment Research Institute urged caution regarding respiratory diseases as the temperature difference between day and night becomes significant during the changing seasons.
According to the Health and Environment Research Institute, through the "Influenza and Acute Respiratory Virus Pathogen Surveillance Project," 451 respiratory disease specimens were submitted from January to the first week of April, approximately 2.7 times higher than the 166 cases during the same period last year.
Test results show a variety of acute respiratory viruses detected, including Rhinovirus 16.4%, Bocavirus 15.1%, Human Coronavirus 14.9%, Adenovirus 11.3%, and Influenza Virus 8.2%.
Acute respiratory infections, which present symptoms such as runny nose, headache, phlegm, and sore throat, occur due to infection by respiratory viruses. They are mainly transmitted through droplets from infected patients or contact with secretions from infected individuals.
Acute respiratory infections are treated symptomatically with rest, fluid supplementation, and antipyretics, while influenza can be treated with symptomatic therapy or antiviral drugs.
A representative from the Health and Environment Research Institute stated, "As the COVID-19 pandemic winds down, it is important to adhere to personal hygiene practices such as wearing masks, washing hands, and observing cough etiquette to prevent respiratory diseases."
