First Overseas Public Library Project Site
Support for Remodeling, Equipment, and Staff Capacity Building
The first result of the government's overseas public library establishment project will be unveiled in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 14th that the remodeling of the Hanoi City Library in Vietnam, the first overseas library project site, will be completed by the end of March and will open on the 18th. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 14th that the Hanoi City Library in Vietnam, the first target of the overseas public library establishment project, will open on the 18th.
The Hanoi City Library completed remodeling last month for this project. With the new renovation, it has become a complex cultural space for local citizens.
The opening ceremony is expected to be attended by Jeon Byeong-geuk, the 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Tran Thi Thang, Chairwoman of the Hanoi People's Committee, as well as officials from the Hanoi City Library, citizens, and about 200 children.
Previously, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has been promoting the overseas small library establishment project since 2007 as part of the Official Development Assistance (ODA) program.
Since 2020, the support scope has expanded to overseas public libraries, creating spaces for reading and cultural enjoyment in beneficiary countries, and supporting lifelong learning, information utilization, and cultural exchange.

Through this project, the Hanoi City Library received support for remodeling floors 1 to 3, equipment and content, installation of a Korean materials center, and capacity building for local library managers and librarians.
Last month, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism invited six administrators, including the deputy director of the Hanoi City Library, to Korea to share Korean library culture and conduct capacity-building training at seven excellent libraries including the National Library of Korea.

Vice Minister Jeon Byeong-geuk said, "I hope the Hanoi City Library will establish itself as a representative complex cultural space for local citizens, and that this will strengthen the friendship between Korea and Vietnam."
