A man in his 60s who deceived a dementia patient and embezzled tens of millions of won was arrested by the police. Investigations revealed that he had been previously punished for similar methods.
On the 14th, Jeju Seogwipo Police Station announced that they had arrested and were investigating A (63) on charges including robbery and theft, according to Yonhap News.
According to the police, A is suspected of extorting about 35 million won from a woman B (78) over 54 occasions from September last year until last year. He committed the crime by taking B, a grade 5 dementia patient, to a bank in Seogwipo City and making her withdraw 300,000 won in cash. This amount was known to be money that B had painstakingly saved over several years while working in public labor.

A met B at a Korean medicine clinic in Jeju in 2018. At that time, A told B, "I will take care of you," and took her cash. He introduced himself to those around as B’s caregiver to avoid suspicion.
However, B’s son, who found this suspicious, submitted a petition to the police on the 23rd of last month stating that "someone impersonating a caregiver is using my mother’s cash, who has cognitive impairment," and the police began an investigation upon receiving it.
Realizing this late, A fled from Jeju International Airport to Gimpo Airport. The police urgently requested cooperation from the Gimpo Airport Police Unit and eventually arrested A at the airport on the morning of the 12th.
Police investigations revealed that A had a prior record of extorting large sums from elderly people using similar methods. In November 2016, he was sentenced to prison for impersonating the director of a nursing hospital in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province, and approaching four elderly people to steal cash.
