Ulsan Office of Education Supports Student Autonomy Activities... Also Reduces 'Hakpok'
The Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education is supporting student self-governance activities to enhance students' autonomy skills and foster a democratic school culture.
This year, each school has increased the student participation budget by 400,000 KRW compared to last year, allocating between 1.5 million and 2.7 million KRW depending on the school size.
The student participation budget system is a student self-governance project by the Ulsan Office of Education that supports the fulfillment of student council presidents' pledges and student council activities.
In this regard, on the 15th, a policy understanding class for the Student Participation Committee will be held in the Oesol meeting room for student representatives and teachers from middle and high schools.
The event will be held in two sessions, morning and afternoon, each lasting three hours. In the morning, 64 middle school students and 47 teachers, totaling 111 participants, will attend, while in the afternoon, 55 high school students and 36 teachers, totaling 91 participants, will attend.
On the 1st, a policy understanding class for the Student Participation Committee was conducted for student representatives from all elementary schools.
The Student Participation Committee is a student self-governance organization where students, as the main agents of education, directly plan and propose student-related policies. Its purpose is to cultivate active civic competence through participation and communication.
Since the second half of last year, the Ulsan Office of Education has operated a dedicated team to develop an operation plan for the Student Participation Committee suitable for the Ulsan region by analyzing the achievements of student self-governance activities in Ulsan and cases from other cities and provinces.
The policy understanding classes, where representatives from each school gather to understand the overall student self-governance activities in Ulsan, started this month. In June and October, regular meetings of the participation committee will be held to share the status of self-governance activities at each school. In December, a policy proposal meeting will be held to share achievements and publish a report.
On this day, students learned about the roles and projects of the Student Participation Committee. They also learned how to lead the student council through the efficient use of the student participation budget.
A student who participated in the policy understanding class said, “It was an enjoyable experience to participate in education as a school representative and learn new things,” adding, “It was a great opportunity to share solutions with student representatives from other schools who have similar concerns.”
