Prosecutor General's Office Submits Opinion to Sentencing Commission: "Penalties for Technology Leakage Crimes Are Too Lenient"
On the 13th, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office submitted an opinion to the Supreme Court Sentencing Commission stating that the sentences for technology leakage crimes, such as industrial espionage, should be increased.
The Supreme Prosecutors' Office stated in the opinion, "Technology leakage crimes, including the overseas outflow of industrial technology, continue to occur, and the technological gap with foreign countries is narrowing or being reversed. Although the statutory penalties in related laws have been increased, there have been consistent criticisms that the actual sentences imposed are excessively low, but the sentencing guidelines have not been revised since May 2017."
The opinion submitted by the Supreme Prosecutors' Office on this day will be used as reference material for the 9th Sentencing Commission, which will be launched on the 27th, to decide which crimes' sentencing guidelines will be established or revised.

The Supreme Prosecutors' Office added, "We submitted case law analysis, reviews of overseas sentencing guidelines, the necessity to strengthen sentencing guidelines, and the results of research projects conducted so far to ensure that technology leakage crimes can be selected as a target crime group for sentencing guideline revision."
