Gurye National Gayageum Competition Held
From May 6th for 2 Days at Seomjin Art Hall
The 21st Gurye National Gayageum Competition, hosted by Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do and organized by the Gayageum Byeongchang Preservation Society (Chairperson Kang Jeongsuk), will be held for two days from May 6 to 7 at the Seomjin Art Hall.
Participants from nationwide elementary, middle, and high school divisions, rookie division, university division, and general division will compete passionately in a total of 14 categories including Gayageum Sanjo, Byeongchang, and creative performances.
Applications for the competition can be submitted by checking and completing the application forms available on the Gurye-gun or Gayageum Byeongchang Preservation Society websites, and sending them via email to the Gayageum Byeongchang Preservation Society Secretariat by April 30.
The grand prize in the general division will be the Presidential Award, and the Cultural Heritage Administration Commissioner’s Award will be given as the Gold Prize. The grand prize in the university division will include the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award, among others.
Governor Kim Sunho said, “Gurye, the hometown of the master Seo Gongcheol, a great Gayageum Sanjo artist, and a city of artistic fragrance that inherits the national intangible cultural heritage Hyangje Julpungnyu and Jansu Nongak, as well as the spiritual home of sound, is hosting the most prestigious Gayageum competition in the country. I hope many talented individuals will participate.”
Meanwhile, to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the Gurye National Gayageum Competition, a congratulatory performance featuring past winners and local artists is planned to be held at Seomjin Art Hall at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 5.
