Boseong-gun Selects the 'Best World Tea, Korea Tea'

Applications Open Until the 24th for Global Tea Tasting and Tea Blending Competition

Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that the largest tea specialty evaluation contest in Korea will be held from May 4 to 6 at the Boseong-gun Youth Training Center, the main venue of the 2023 Boseong World Tea Expo.

This evaluation contest is divided into three categories: ▲World Tea Evaluation Contest selecting famous teas from around the world, ▲Korea Tea Evaluation Contest selecting the best teas in Korea, and ▲Korea Tea Blending Contest.

The 11th annual △World Tea Evaluation Contest will be held on May 6 and divided into six categories: green tea, blue tea, black tea, white tea, dark tea, and yellow tea. Tea evaluation experts from 10 countries including Australia, India, France, Latvia, Denmark, Singapore, China, Taiwan, and Sri Lanka will judge over 100 famous teas worldwide and award prizes such as the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Award.

Sarah Johnston, Chairperson of the Australian Tea Association, said, “The Boseong Tea Evaluation Contest is a prestigious tea evaluation event recognized worldwide, with tea experts from various countries participating.” She added, “It will be a valuable opportunity to introduce famous teas produced in major tea-producing regions around the world to tea lovers globally and to promote Korea’s excellent teas.”

The ▲Korea Tea Evaluation Contest, held on May 5, will judge and award over 100 products including green tea, fermented tea, rice cake tea, and powdered tea produced nationwide from regions such as Jeju, Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Gangwon.

For this Korea Tea Evaluation Contest, judges with over 10 years of experience in tea evaluation and tea culture activities will be recruited. Selected judges will participate in a workshop before joining the evaluation process.

The 10th annual △Korea Tea Blending Contest will be held on May 4, where blending experts will judge blended teas (T&T, T&H) produced nationwide and select the best tea.

Yeoyeon Sunim, the contest director, said, “The World Tea Evaluation Contest, held for nearly 10 years, has been Korea’s top tea evaluation event and has greatly contributed to the development of Korean tea quality.” He added, “We are preparing a contest that matches the current trends focusing on rice cake tea and powdered tea, which are currently receiving the most attention.”

A Boseong-gun official stated, “We ask for the interest of many tea farmers and tea enthusiasts in the Korea Tea Evaluation Contest, which is making Korean tea a world-renowned tea.”

Meanwhile, this tea evaluation contest will also operate the Jeollanam-do Tea Industry Hall to promote and sell teas from Jeollanam-do tea farms, the Tea Craft Hall to promote and sell various tea tools, and the Buyer Consultation Hall where professional tea consultants will introduce Korean tea to domestic and international tea buyers.
