'Hapcheon Chunlan' Registered as a Geographical Indication Collective Mark by the Korean Intellectual Property Office
Recognized for Historic Significance and Excellence, First Registration in the Floral Industry
‘Hapcheon Chunlan’ from Gyeongnam has been registered as a geographical indication collective mark by the Korean Intellectual Property Office.
This is the first nationwide geographical indication collective mark registration for the Chunlan category and also the first registration in the floriculture field.
It recognizes the historical reputation and excellence of Hapcheon Chunlan, enabling exclusive and exclusive rights to the name Hapcheon Chunlan in the future.
According to a county official, “Since 2018, Chunlan has been cultivated as a new income crop, and at the same time, to enhance the brand value of Hapcheon as the mecca of Chunlan, the registration of the geographical indication collective mark was pursued, resulting in this collective mark registration decision after about two years of trademark application.”
Hapcheon has mountainous areas accounting for 73% of the total area, providing excellent conditions for orchid growth. Since the 1990s, it has been known as the natural habitat of Korean Chunlan, naturally forming a cultivation and distribution ecosystem.
It was the first in the nation to start developing the orchid industry, and currently, about 90 places operate orchid farms as a livelihood, earning it a reputation as the mecca of the domestic orchid industry.
Recognizing Hapcheon’s efforts, characteristics, historicity, and excellence related to the Chunlan industry, the Korean Intellectual Property Office decided on the ‘Hapcheon Chunlan’ collective mark.
County Governor Kim Yoon-cheol said, “With this collective mark registration, the brand value of Hapcheon Chunlan has increased, and market competitiveness has been secured,” adding, “We will further accelerate efforts to enter the floriculture market with Hapcheon Chunlan.”

The geographical indication collective mark system is a system introduced to protect the names of regional specialty products and is under the jurisdiction of the Korean Intellectual Property Office. Currently, Hapcheon County is also pursuing registration of geographical indication with the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service, which mainly certifies the quality of the product, and is about to register the Korean Chunlan cultivation greenhouse facility standards with the Rural Development Administration within a few days.
