Gwangju Buk-gu Selected for Vulnerable Area Living Condition Improvement Project Competition
On the 11th, Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced that it has secured 3 billion KRW in project funds after being selected in the ‘2023 Vulnerable Area Living Condition Improvement Project’ competition hosted by the National Balanced Development Committee.
The Vulnerable Area Living Condition Improvement Project is aimed at improving basic living conditions closely related to daily life such as housing, safety, and hygiene, so that residents can be guaranteed a minimum quality of life.
A total of 91 locations nationwide were selected in this competition, including 11 urban areas and 80 rural fishing villages, and in Gwangju, the Geumdang Saetteul Village Development Project in Wolchul-dong, Buk-gu was the only one selected.
Geumdang Village in Wolchul-dong is a deteriorated urban-rural complex area on the outskirts of the city, where slumification is progressing due to a high proportion of elderly low-income population and houses over 30 years old, and residents have continuously experienced inconvenience due to a lack of living infrastructure.
Accordingly, Buk-gu will invest the secured 3 billion KRW project funds to promote multifaceted basic living condition improvement projects in the area by 2026, including safety assurance, expansion of living hygiene infrastructure, housing maintenance, and human care.
First, to ensure residents’ safety, safety facilities in disaster-prone areas such as steep slopes, installation of security CCTV, and road maintenance will be carried out, and living hygiene infrastructure such as water and sewage system maintenance, LPG pipeline construction, and remodeling of communal restrooms will be expanded.
In addition, housing maintenance will be promoted through slate roof improvement, repair of old houses, and demolition of abandoned houses to improve residents’ living conditions, and resident care programs such as elderly care systems and village schools will be operated.
Moon In, the head of Buk-gu Office, said, “We hope that through this project, local residents can live in a safe and healthy environment,” and added, “We will continue to promote the Vulnerable Area Living Condition Improvement Project to enhance the quality of life for residents.”
