Incheon City Promotes Designation of 'Safe Walking Zones' Around Medical Facilities
Installation in May in Gil Hospital and Namdong-gu Guwol-dong Area
Incheon City is designating the nation's first 'Safety and Security Zone (Hospital zone)' for vulnerable pedestrians around medical facilities.
On the 10th, the city announced that through the '7th Project for Revitalizing Old Downtown Design,' which began in July last year, it has developed pedestrian-friendly designs around medical facilities such as hospitals and nursing homes and established guidelines for safety zones.
The city plans to designate safety zones within a 1 km radius, where vulnerable pedestrians can walk within 10 minutes, based on large hospitals with 300 or more beds.
To this end, the city recently diagnosed the pedestrian safety status in Namdong-gu Guwol-dong area, including Gachon University Gil Hospital, the pilot project site, together with the Citizen Design Group, and completed the development of designs suitable for the site. Design planning and installation of safety zones are expected to be completed by May.
The safety zones will include pedestrian rest areas, emergency guidance for patients, traffic lights integrated with artificial intelligence (AI), and pedestrian-friendly designs to prevent safety accidents.
An official from Incheon City stated, "We plan to first improve the pedestrian environment around medical facilities frequently visited by vulnerable pedestrians and then expand it to all pedestrian roads."
