Bar Association Launches Disciplinary Investigation into Kwon Kyung-ae for 'Non-Attendance in School Violence Lawsuit'
The Korean Bar Association (KBA) will begin disciplinary proceedings against attorney Kwon Kyung-ae (58, Judicial Research and Training Institute class 33), who represented the bereaved family of a school violence victim but lost the case due to her absence from the trial.
According to the KBA on the 10th, the proposal to approve an ex officio investigation into attorney Kwon was passed at the KBA Standing Board meeting that day. A KBA official stated, "We will take strict measures and all necessary actions to prevent recurrence," adding, "Even when lawyers engage in external activities such as social or political activities, we will strengthen ethics education to ensure they do not neglect their primary duty and profession of litigation."
If the investigation committee finds evidence of wrongdoing, the KBA Disciplinary Committee will decide whether to discipline attorney Kwon and determine the severity of the sanctions.
Attorney Kwon, co-author of the book 'The Black Book of Cho Kuk,' became embroiled in controversy after it was revealed that she failed to appear at court without permission while representing the bereaved family of a school violence victim.
Attorney Kwon missed three appellate court hearings, leading to the withdrawal of the appeal filed by the bereaved family against the first-instance ruling in November of last year. Consequently, the part of the first-instance ruling that favored the family was overturned to a loss. It was reported that attorney Kwon did not inform the family of this fact for five months.
