"All Transportation Services in One App"…MaaS Pilot Project Promotion
Public and Private Sectors Join Hands to Lay Foundation
Expected Service Launch Date is December
The government is set to develop a service that integrates search, reservation, and payment for various transportation modes such as railroads, aviation, and buses into a single app (mobile application).
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Committee announced on the 7th that it will hold a cooperation agreement ceremony to promote a pilot project for MaaS (Mobility as a Service), a future-oriented transportation platform that provides optimal route guidance, reservation, and payment for all transportation modes nationwide through a single platform.
Previously, through a public contest, the committee selected Korea Expressway Corporation as the public operator and Supermove and Kakao Mobility as private operators. With this agreement, they plan to officially commence the pilot project. The expected service launch date is December.
First, as a public institution, Korea Expressway Corporation will establish and operate a fair and transparent open MaaS system and perform stable data relay functions.
Supermove and Kakao Mobility, as private platform operators, will pilot nationwide MaaS services linked with the open MaaS system.
The committee will support the overall project by providing various administrative support for the pilot project, coordinating with transportation operators for data linkage, mediating stakeholders to establish business models, and facilitating inter-agency consultations for legal and institutional improvements.
The project period is two years from the nationwide MaaS service launch, with a possible one-year extension if necessary. Afterward, the open MaaS system will be fully opened so that anyone can provide MaaS services based on creative ideas.
Lee Seong-hae, Chairman of the Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Committee, stated, “This pilot project is the first step toward nationwide MaaS that can bring great convenience to the public’s mobility and significant benefits to the mobility industry as a whole.” He added, “We hope that public and private sectors can closely cooperate so that diverse business models linked with various lifestyle sectors such as tourism, telecommunications, parking, and content centered on transportation can be creatively generated.”
