Masan Fire Station Sends Citizen Who Assaulted 'Paramedic' to Prosecutors
The Masan Fire Station in Changwon, Gyeongnam, has taken strong measures in response to the recent continuous incidents of verbal abuse and assault against 119 paramedics.
According to the fire station on the 6th, at around 3 a.m. on the 8th of last month, paramedics were dispatched to Hapjeong-dong, Masanhwoin-gu, Changwon City, following a report that a man was lying down in a heavily intoxicated state and bleeding. It was later revealed that during transport to the hospital, the patient verbally abused the paramedics, kicked one paramedic in the chest, and struck another on the head with his hand.

Accordingly, the fire station, applying a zero-tolerance policy, conducted an investigation through direct inquiry by the Fire Special Judicial Police. Upon determining that a crime had occurred, the case was forwarded to the prosecution with a recommendation for indictment on the same day.
Chief Lee Seon-jang stated, “Violence against paramedics not only causes personal harm to the paramedics but can also lead to gaps in essential emergency services for citizens. We will respond strictly to ensure that acts of violence against paramedics are completely eradicated.”

According to Article 50 (Penalties) of the Fire Services Act, anyone who assaults or threatens fire service personnel engaged in emergency activities, thereby obstructing fire service operations, may face up to five years in prison or a fine of up to 50 million won.
