'Korean Pear' Export Route to Ecuador Opens
Korea-Ecuador Reach Agreement on Export of 'Guksan Pear'
10 Years After Negotiations Began
From this year, domestic pears can be exported to Ecuador. This negotiation settlement was achieved 10 years after starting export quarantine negotiations with Ecuador in August 2013.
Pears are one of the top 10 domestic fresh agricultural products with large export volumes, with about 20,000 tons exported annually to more than 30 countries including the United States, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 6th that it officially received a letter on the 23rd of last month notifying that the export quarantine negotiations for domestic pears to Ecuador, conducted between the Korean and Ecuadorian plant quarantine authorities, have been concluded and enacted in Ecuador.
According to the negotiation results, to export domestic pears to Ecuador, orchards and packing houses must be registered with the Quarantine Agency, and requirements such as pest and disease management during cultivation, cultivation site quarantine, and export quarantine must be met.
The Quarantine Agency plans to proceed with follow-up procedures to enable practical exports by establishing the "Export Guidelines for Fresh Korean Pears to Ecuador," reflecting Ecuador's import requirements for Korean pears.
Ko Kyung-bong, head of the Export Support Division at the Quarantine Agency, said, "We will continue to pursue strategic quarantine negotiations to expand exports of domestic agricultural products and develop new markets."
