The performance began with a full rendition of Heungboga by master singer Inancho and her disciples, followed by lively stages including Yukjabaegi and Namdo folk song Dongbaek Taryeong, delighting the audience’s eyes and ears.
Master singer Inancho was born in 1961 in Haenam-gun, Jeonnam, and naturally encountered traditional Korean music growing up in a family involved in the genre. At the age of 11, she first learned singing from the late master Kim Sang-yong.
From 1980, master singer Inancho met the late master Kang Do-geun (1918-1996), the great teacher and fifth-generation successor of Dongpyeonje (Song Heung-rok - Song Gwang-rok - Song Woo-ryong - Song Man-gap - Kim Jeong-mun - Kang Do-geun). Under his guidance, she learned all five pansori repertoires, including Heungboga.
In 1992, at the Namwon Chunhyang National Gugak Competition (currently Chunhyang Gugak Competition), she won the Presidential Award at the age of 32, becoming the youngest recipient.
Even after receiving the Presidential Award, she continued to study to build a better world of sound. She learned Chunhyangga from master singer Seong Woo-hyang and Simcheongga and Jeokbyeokga from master singer Ahn Sook-sun, acquiring the delicacy of Boseong sound as well.
Throughout her decades-long pansori career, master singer Inancho has held numerous recitals and performances. In 2020, she was recognized as the holder of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Heungboga. She is dedicated to preserving the Dongpyeonje tradition in Namwon, the birthplace of Dongpyeonje, and nurturing future generations.
