Goseong-gun Hail-myeon Jaran-do, Selected for Support in Operating Remote Island Routes
Securing Transportation Means for Book Regional Relocation
Jaran-do in Hail-myeon, Goseong-gun, Gyeongnam, has been finally selected for the 2023 Remote Island Route Operation Support Project organized by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
The Remote Island Route Operation Support Project is a national policy project strategically promoted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. It provides partial support for route operation costs such as fuel expenses to residents of remote islands where passenger ships and ferries do not call and no alternative transportation exists, thereby guaranteeing the basic rights and mobility rights of island residents.
Jaran-do, selected this time, is home to 27 people in 21 households, but it has no regular scheduled ships, and most of the village residents are elderly, making it difficult to secure maritime transportation rights.
Accordingly, the county and local residents have joined forces to prepare the application despite difficult conditions to improve the transportation environment for Jaran-do residents.
After applying for the project in February, it was reviewed for a month by Gyeongnam Province and the local Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office, and was finally selected through the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ written and presentation evaluations.
Accordingly, support will be provided for necessary ship operation costs such as labor costs, fuel costs, ship inspection and repair costs, excluding the cost of securing the ship.
Kim Seong-young, Director of the Marine and Fisheries Division, said, “With this selection, the mobility rights of residents living on Jaran-do will be guaranteed, and it is expected to create greater synergy in connection with the tourism projects currently underway on Jaran-do. We will do our best to promote the project so that the linkage between transportation and tourism projects can revitalize nearby villages and local commercial districts.”
