Yeonggwang-gun Signs Agreement for Operation of Waste Treatment Facility at Environmental Management Center
Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kang Jong-man) announced on the 22nd that on the 20th, it signed an "Agreement for the Operation and Expansion of the Environmental Management Center Waste Treatment Facility" with representatives of residents from the surrounding impact area at the small conference room on the 2nd floor of the county office.
The county currently operates an incineration facility with a daily capacity of 20 tons, but since its service life (15 years/2022) has expired, it is promoting the installation of a new incinerator with an appropriate capacity reflecting the amount of household waste generated.

Accordingly, after holding the first residents' briefing session in December 2019 and three years and three months of consultations, residents agreed to expand the incineration facility to a daily capacity of 40 tons within the existing Environmental Management Center site and to install an eco-friendly food waste treatment facility.
The main contents of the agreement among resident representatives include creating an environmental conservation fund of 4.9 billion KRW over two years from 2023 to 2024 and 700 million KRW annually until 2032 to support the surrounding impact area. It also stipulates prioritizing residents of the surrounding impact area and Hongnong-eup when installing the latest recycling sorting facility and hiring environmental workers.
The county expects the new incineration facility to be operational by 2026, and through this agreement, it will be able to proactively respond to the direct landfill ban on household waste starting in 2030.
On the day of the agreement, the county also held a "Waste Treatment Facility Site Selection Committee" meeting to complete the review and resolution on the site, proceeding step by step with legal procedures. The committee members urged to “make decisions through sufficient visits to advanced cases when selecting construction methods” and to “strive to ensure that the waste treatment facility is always operated pleasantly and safely.”
Governor Kang Jong-man said, “I appreciate the efforts and consent of the resident representatives from the surrounding impact area and the site selection committee. We will strive to minimize environmental pollution and ensure the health rights of local residents.”
