Professor Kim Gisu of Dong-A University Elected as New President of the Korean Society for the Preservation of Modern Architecture
Professor Kim Gisu of the Department of Architecture at Dong-A University has been elected as the president of the Korea Modern Architecture Preservation Society (DOCOMOMO Korea).
Professor Kim was chosen as the 7th president at the recent extraordinary board meeting and general assembly of the Korea Modern Architecture Preservation Society held at the Paichai Hakdang History Museum in Jeong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul.
The Korea Modern Architecture Preservation Society is a member organization of DOCOMOMO International, a UNESCO-registered international organization, and this year marks its 20th anniversary since establishment.
The society has conducted regular academic seminars, modern architecture field trips, and contests for the preservation and utilization of modern architectural structures. It also hosted the DOCOMOMO International General Assembly and academic conference for the first time in an Asian country.
Professor Kim Gisu stated, “I will strive to secure human and material resources for civil society experts’ activities, such as resuming suspended academic activities and contests for modern architecture preservation.”
Professor Kim graduated from the Department of Architectural Engineering at Dong-A University and earned his master's and doctoral degrees in architecture from Kyoto Institute of Technology in Japan. Since 2001, he has been teaching at his alma mater, nurturing future scholars. He has also served as the chair of the Policy Subcommittee of the Busan City Architectural Policy Committee, a member of the Urban Planning Committee, and is currently the director of the Seokdang Museum at Dong-A University.

In recognition of his creative research and academic activities, he received an academic award from the Architectural Institute of Korea, and in 2020, he was awarded a commendation from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries for his contributions to the preservation of Korea’s lighthouse cultural heritage.
