Seongnam City announced on the 13th that, as a result of fine dust reduction projects over the past five years, the annual average concentration of ultrafine dust last year was observed to have decreased by 33% to 18㎍/㎥.
This figure represents a reduction of 9㎍ from the 27㎍ per 1㎥ concentration recorded in 2017 when Seongnam began its fine dust reduction projects in 2018, and it is the cleanest air quality since ultrafine dust meteorological observations started in 2015 (21㎍/㎥).
The annual average concentration of ultrafine dust in the Seongnam area has decreased each year: 23㎍/㎥ in 2019, 20㎍/㎥ in 2020, and 19㎍/㎥ in 2021.
This reduction in ultrafine dust concentration is attributed to the implementation of 20 detailed projects over five years, including the installation of reduction devices and early scrappage subsidies for 18,992 old diesel vehicles, subsidies for purchasing 6,569 eco-friendly vehicles, and replacement subsidies for 16,276 household eco-friendly boilers.
A city official stated, "An annual average ultrafine dust concentration of 18㎍/㎥ means that the sky is clear enough to see the 123-story building in Seoul, located about 12 km from the Seongnam City Hall building," adding, "We will continue to discover and promote fine dust reduction policies closely related to citizens' health and daily life."
