Pence: "Trump Was Wrong... History Will Hold Him Accountable for the January 6 Incident"
Mike Pence, former Vice President and considered one of the Republican presidential hopefuls in the United States, strongly criticized former President Donald Trump in relation to the 'January 6 Capitol riot.'
According to the Associated Press and others on the 12th (local time), Pence attended the annual dinner speech of the 'Gridiron Club' in Washington DC the day before, where many politicians and journalists were present, and stated, "Trump was wrong." He said, "I do not have the authority to overturn the election," and added, "His reckless words put my family and everyone at the Capitol in danger that day. History will hold Donald Trump accountable."
This statement is considered the strongest criticism Pence has made so far, despite having served in the Trump administration. As the 2024 presidential campaign intensifies, the rift between Trump, who has already officially declared his candidacy, and Pence, who has chosen an 'anti-Trump' stance, is growing wider.
During the January 6 incident, Pence, as the ex officio President of the Senate, was responsible for the final certification of the Electoral College vote confirming Joe Biden's victory. The AP reported, "Ahead of January 6, 2021, former President Trump pressured Pence to overturn the election results, but Pence refused," and "Some rioters who stormed the Capitol shouted, 'Hang Mike Pence.'" This information is also included in the final report released by the U.S. House Select Committee investigating the January 6 events.

Pence described the events of that day as "shameful," saying, "To express it otherwise would be to mock dignity." He also emphasized, "As long as I live, I will never diminish the wounds of that day, the lives lost, or the heroic law enforcement officers." Pence had also criticized former President Trump in his memoir published last November.
