Ulsan City Collaborates with UN Food and Agriculture Organization to Combat Hunger and Support Official Development Assistance
Ulsan Overseas Delegation's First Schedule, Visit to Thailand FAO Asia-Pacific Office
Ulsan City has decided to strengthen cooperation with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and in various fields including global hunger eradication.
Ulsan City announced that it will dispatch an overseas delegation and, as the first schedule, visit the FAO Asia-Pacific Regional Office in Bangkok, Thailand at 11 a.m. on the 10th (1 p.m. Korean time).
During this schedule, they will discuss with Kim Jong-jin, the Asia-Pacific regional representative, the role of Ulsan City in hunger eradication, support for agriculture and rural development in developing countries, response to climate change, and ways to strengthen cooperation with FAO.
Since 2012, Ulsan City has continuously carried out official development assistance (ODA) projects for developing countries in the health and medical fields through dispatching medical volunteer teams to medically vulnerable areas in developing countries and inviting medical personnel from developing countries for training.
In addition, Ulsan is expanding its existing support in the health sector and is engaging in international community support by utilizing Ulsan’s strengths such as environmental restoration and urban forest creation.
Following the government’s announcement of the ‘Support Plan for Local Government ODA Promotion System’ in 2021, Ulsan City participated in government ministry proposal projects led by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and in 2023, the ‘Capacity Building Project for Urban Forest Creation to Respond to Climate Change’ was selected as a national project, promoting ODA projects linked with international organizations such as FAO.
Park Cheol-min, Ulsan City’s Ambassador for International Relations, said, “The need for ODA projects for developing countries is increasing due to health crises caused by COVID-19, economic and trade crises, and food crises resulting from the Ukraine war,” adding, “We will contribute to international development cooperation through aid appropriate to the economic scale by utilizing Ulsan’s ODA resources.”
Kim Jong-jin, the Asia-Pacific regional representative, said, “We hope for interest and support in FAO projects linked with Ulsan’s strengths in industrial and environmental policies.”
On the same day, the Ulsan overseas delegation encouraged Son Eo-jin, a young Ulsan resident working as an intern at the FAO in Bangkok, Thailand, for the ‘U FLY (Ulsan For InternationaL Youth)’ project.
