Daewoo E&C Strengthens Competitiveness in Nuclear Power Plant Contracts... "Best Efforts to Secure Shin Hanul Units 3 and 4"
Daewoo E&C is strengthening its competitiveness in the nuclear power market by consecutively completing nuclear power plant projects it has recently undertaken.
Daewoo E&C announced on the 8th that it successfully completed the replacement of steam generators for Hanbit Units 3 and 4, located in Yeonggwang, Jeollanam-do, last December, and plans to complete the construction of the third nuclear fuel plant next month.
The steam generator replacement project involves replacing the steam generator, one of the core components of a nuclear power plant, to improve the nuclear power generation efficiency of a plant that still has remaining operational life. This requires securing decontamination and dismantling technology for radioactive contaminants inside the containment building. So far, steam generator replacements have been completed and are in commercial operation at a total of nine nuclear power plants in South Korea, including Hanbit Units 3 and 4.
Daewoo E&C is also carrying out the 'Wolseong Unit 1 Dismantling Project and Process Design.' This service involves designing an economical dismantling plan and an optimal dismantling process that considers the safe operation of shared facilities and adjacent units (Wolseong Unit 2). Wolseong Unit 1 is the world's first CANDU (Canadian Deuterium Uranium) type nuclear power plant scheduled for dismantling, and through this project, Daewoo E&C will secure competitiveness in the overseas heavy water reactor dismantling market.
The reason Daewoo E&C is focusing on the nuclear power plant dismantling sector is due to its keen interest in the future nuclear power plant dismantling market. According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's announcement in January last year, the estimated dismantling cost per nuclear power plant unit is 872.6 billion KRW, and the domestic dismantling market is expected to reach a total scale of 26 trillion KRW.
Daewoo E&C, which has secured technological competitiveness across the entire cycle from nuclear power plant design, construction, performance improvement, waste treatment, to dismantling, is currently participating as the construction sector representative in Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power's 'Team Korea' for new nuclear power plant projects in the Czech Republic and Poland. The Polish new nuclear power plant project involves constructing 2 to 4 PWR (Pressurized Water Reactor) units in the Pomorze region, and Team Korea signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) last October with Polish private power company ZE PAK and state-owned Polish Power Group (PGE).

In addition, Daewoo E&C is also putting effort into securing the Shin-Hanul Units 3 and 4 project. The construction of Shin-Hanul Units 3 and 4, located in Uljin, Gyeongsangbuk-do, is scheduled to resume with a goal of starting construction in 2024. Currently, the main equipment contract procedures are underway, and the main installation contractor will be selected soon. A Daewoo E&C official stated, “As we are participating in the Czech and Polish nuclear power plant bids representing the Republic of Korea, Daewoo E&C’s technological capabilities have already been recognized,” adding, “With full support from the group, we will do our best to secure the Shin-Hanul Units 3 and 4 project.”
