Yeosu City Holds Ceremony Commemorating 100th Anniversary of Port Opening
Preparation for Various Commemorative Events from April 1 to 4
Yeosu City in Jeollanam-do announced that it will designate the four days from April 1 to 4 as the 100th Anniversary of the Port Opening Week and hold various side events around Yi Sun-sin Square.
The event is organized to look back on the 100 years since Yeosu Port opened as a customs-designated port on April 1, 1923, and to present a vision for the next 100 years of the future.
First, on the first day of the commemorative week, April 1, the "Yeosu Port 100th Anniversary Ceremony" will be held at Yi Sun-sin Square.
The main programs include the Yeosu Port time capsule burial ceremony, commemorative tree planting, awards for maritime meritorious persons, the Yeosu Port Future 100 Years Vision Declaration performance and ceremony, and congratulatory performances.
From then until April 4, the commemorative week will continue with various programs for citizens, such as a Yeosu Port photo exhibition, commemorative musicals, operation of the city promotion hall including the Island Expo, children's craft experiences, drone experiences, metaverse experience halls, and yacht boarding experiences.
Earlier, in March 2021, the city launched the "100 Citizens Promotion Committee" to promote the 100th anniversary commemorative project together with citizens, and in June of the same year, enacted the "Yeosu Port 100th Anniversary Commemorative Project Ordinance" to establish an execution system for the commemorative project.
Additionally, through a feasibility study for the execution plan, the city has been collecting materials related to Yeosu Port and publishing the 100-year history of the port, identifying eight short-term tasks, and promoting mid- to long-term tasks such as the construction of an international exhibition and convention center and the creation of a waterfront park at the port.
A city official said, "We are preparing a meaningful event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Yeosu Port, reflecting on its past history and announcing the beginning of a new 100 years of the future."
