The Fate of a Man in His 50s Who Made 'Beehive Holes' on a Benz with a Sledgehammer
The Original Reason Known as 'Parking Conflict' Differs
A man in his 50s who repeatedly struck a foreign car worth around 200 million won parked in a residential area with a sledgehammer, leaving it riddled with dents, was arrested by the police. Initially, this incident was reported on online communities as having been triggered by the car owner's illegal parking, but this was completely untrue. According to the police investigation, the perpetrator committed the crime while intoxicated due to resentment toward the expensive vehicle.
On the 4th, the Sasang Police Station in Busan sent a man in his 50s, identified as Mr. A, to the prosecution on charges of special property damage for hitting and damaging a vehicle with a sledgehammer the previous day.
Mr. A struck a Mercedes-Benz vehicle worth about 240 million won with a sledgehammer around 1 p.m. on the 23rd of last month in a residential parking lot in Jurye-dong, Sasang-gu, Busan. Mr. A hit the car dozens of times and was arrested on the spot by police who responded to the report.
Photos of the damaged vehicle caused a stir online. Both the front and rear windshields were shattered, and the hood and trunk were dented. The car was damaged in a pattern resembling a “honeycomb,” earning it the nickname “Honeycomb Benz.” The police estimate the repair costs to be between 70 to 80 million won.
The severely damaged vehicle was initially reported as having been vandalized after illegally parking in a resident-priority parking lot. Some netizens criticized the Mercedes-Benz driver, saying things like, “The stress from parking must have been so severe,” “The owner probably didn’t leave contact information,” and “It must have been really bad.”
However, the police investigation revealed that the incident was unrelated to parking. The parking lot where the car was parked is a public parking space during the day and is used as a resident-priority parking lot after evening.
It was confirmed that Mr. A committed the crime while intoxicated. He reportedly stated that he did not like such an expensive car being in his neighborhood.
