Changwon Special City Holds 'Patriotic Martyrs Memorial Ceremony and Commemoration'
Commemorating March 1st Movement Day, Honoring the Achievements of Patriotic Activists
Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam held the ‘Patriotic Martyrs Memorial Ceremony and Commemoration’ on the 1st at the Changwon Patriotic Martyrs Shrine (located in Jinjeon-myeon, Masanhappo-gu) to honor the achievements of patriotic martyrs who dedicated themselves to national independence on the occasion of the 104th anniversary of the March 1st Movement, and to inherit and develop the noble spirit of independence and patriotism.

View original imageOn this day, the memorial ceremony was first held at Sungjeolsa, where the spirit tablets of 94 patriotic martyrs are enshrined, organized by the Jinjeon-myeon Palgakhoe. The chief officiant was Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City; the second officiant was Moon Sungyu, Vice Chairman of the Changwon Special City Council; and the third officiant was Myung Inho, a representative of the bereaved families.
Following this, a commemoration ceremony was held with about 200 attendees including local members of the National Assembly, provincial and city council members, and heads of veterans’ organizations. The event became a meaningful occasion to honor the noble sacrifices of that day by chanting “Daehan Independence Manse” (Long live Korean independence) three times, uniting the entire nation as it did 104 years ago.

View original imageIn his memorial address, Hong Nampyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, said, “On the occasion of the March 1st Movement anniversary, honoring the noble spirit of the patriotic martyrs who elevated the value of national dignity for the restoration of sovereignty is our duty to be widely passed down to future generations.” He added, “Changwon Special City will do its best to achieve citizen harmony just as the patriotic ancestors united for independence, and even amid difficult conditions such as economic recession, we will support each other and strive for change and innovation to turn numerous crises into opportunities.”

Every year on March 1st, Changwon Special City holds a memorial rite at the Changwon Patriotic Martyrs Shrine to commemorate the loyalty and devotion of patriotic martyrs who were either born in or active in Changwon, reflecting on the historical significance of the March 1st Movement.
