Seoul National University Reduces Withdrawal Rate by Applying High School Grades in Regular Admissions
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] As a result of closing the regular admissions for the 2023 academic year, it was found that 28.8% of the successful applicants to Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Korea University ultimately gave up their final registration.

View original imageAccording to Jongno Academy on the 19th, an analysis of the regular admissions results for Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Korea University, which recently finalized the announcement of additional successful candidates, showed that out of a total of 4,660 recruits, 1,343 people (28.8%) gave up registration. This is similar to last year's 1,301 people (29.5%).
Seoul National University saw a significant decrease in registration cancellations with a total of 155 people (11.5%) giving up registration compared to last year (202 people, 19.5%), while Yonsei University and Korea University saw an increase in students giving up registration compared to last year. Yonsei University had a total of 643 people (38.5%) give up registration, an increase of 5 from last year, and Korea University also had 545 people (33.2%) not register, an increase of 84.
In the case of Seoul National University's regular admissions, which applied school records for the first time in the 2023 academic year, it is analyzed that the impact was significant because excellent students in the CSAT initially applied to medical fields rather than Seoul National University.
By department, the humanities withdrawal rate at Yonsei University and Korea University (499 people, 32.1%) increased significantly compared to last year (477 people, 28.8%).
The withdrawal rate for natural sciences at Yonsei University and Korea University was 42.9% (649 people), slightly higher than last year (606 people, 41.0%).
Across all three universities, 737 people (33.0%) in natural sciences and 564 people (28.1%) in humanities did not register. In arts and physical education, a total of 42 people (10.0%) gave up registration.
The number of medical field registration cancellations at Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Korea University significantly decreased from 94 last year to 63 this year. Seoul National University’s College of Medicine had no registration cancellations as in the previous year, Yonsei University’s College of Medicine had 8 cancellations (10 last year), and Korea University’s College of Medicine had 4 cancellations (6 last year).
There were also departments where all initially accepted candidates gave up registration: Yonsei University’s Department of System Semiconductor Engineering recorded a withdrawal rate of 130.0% relative to the recruitment quota, Yonsei University’s Department of Computer Science had 120.6%, and Yonsei University’s Department of Pharmacy had 116.7%.
