Democratic Party Angered by News of Lee Jae-myung's Arrest Warrant Request: "We Will Fight Resolutely"
[Asia Economy Reporters Naju-seok and Park Joon-yi] Park Hong-geun, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on the 16th regarding the prosecution's request for an arrest warrant for Representative Lee Jae-myung, "The Democratic Party will resolutely fight from the standpoint of common sense together with the people and party members."
At the policy coordination meeting held at the National Assembly that day, after news of the arrest warrant request for Representative Lee was delivered, Floor Leader Park made additional remarks, saying, "It is truly deplorable," and added, "The prosecution has conducted an outrageous and unjust investigation against Representative Lee, and looking at the grounds for today's request, it is nothing more or less than an attempt to fit already established facts to a predetermined narrative." He said, "It is not wrong to see them as mere henchmen of the regime, whose sole purpose is to eliminate the opposition party leader as a political rival."
Regarding follow-up measures, Floor Leader Park said, "We will consult with the party leadership about the prosecution's warrant request and promptly organize our stance on how to respond at the party and National Assembly levels."
Furthermore, regarding the prosecution's request for an arrest warrant for Representative Lee, he criticized, "He was recently a presidential candidate and the leader of the largest party in the National Assembly, with no risk of flight or evidence tampering, and he has faithfully appeared before the prosecution to provide explanations. The prosecution of South Korea has entered a process of proving and admitting that they themselves are a prosecutor dictatorship."
The Democratic Party plans to convene the Supreme Council and other bodies to discuss follow-up countermeasures related to the motion to consent to Representative Lee's arrest.
