'Big Match' Genesis Invitational Viewing Points
$20 Million Premier Match Upgrade, Woods Returns
Heated 'Number 1' Competition, Im Sungjae Aims for Victory
A ‘big match’ sponsored by a Korean company is about to take place.
The PGA Tour Genesis Invitational will be held for four days starting on the 16th (local time) at the Riviera Country Club (par 71, 7,322 yards) in Palisades near Los Angeles, California. To compete against LIV Golf, the PGA Tour has significantly increased the prize money for nine regular tournaments, elevating them to ‘premium events.’ The Genesis Invitational will also be held as a $20 million tournament, an $8 million increase from last year. This year, the event is expected to be hotter than ever with the appearance of the ‘Golf Emperor’ Tiger Woods from the United States. This is a key point to watch at the Genesis Invitational, hosted by the Tiger Woods Foundation.
◆ "Woods is back" = Woods disappeared from the field after missing the cut at the Open Championship last July. After nearly seven months away from regular PGA Tour events, he has been listed among the players for this year’s tournament. Woods appeared at the PNC Championship, an event held last December, but it was a two-day event and he played while riding a cart. This time, it is a regular tour event requiring him to walk all four rounds, providing an opportunity to observe how much his stamina and performance have recovered.
Just the fact that Woods is participating has heated up the tournament atmosphere. Fellow players unanimously welcomed Woods’ return to the field, and the Genesis Invitational organizing committee expects large crowds of spectators. Woods has not performed well at Riviera Country Club. He has played 14 PGA Tour events held here but has never won. This is the only course where Woods has played more than 10 times without a victory.
◆ "Fierce battle for the No. 1 spot" = The race for the world No. 1 ranking is intense. This year, the strong ‘troika’ system has been established by Scottie Scheffler (USA, 9.18 points), Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland, 8.67 points), and Jon Rahm (Spain, 8.36 points), who will compete for pride for the second consecutive week. The difference in world ranking points among the top three is only 0.82 points. Scheffler reclaimed the No. 1 spot by winning last week’s WM Phoenix Open and aims for back-to-back wins.
McIlroy, who dropped to No. 2, is seeking revenge. He finished tied for 32nd at the WM Phoenix Open, his first PGA Tour event of the year. Rahm, ranked third, is determined to continue his momentum this year. Rahm secured two consecutive wins last month at the ‘champion of champions’ Sentry Tournament of Champions and the American Express. He has finished in the top 10 in all six tournaments he has entered this season.
◆ "Will Korean power shine?" = Korea’s ‘new groom’ Sungjae Im leads the charge. He is on the rise, having tied for 6th place at last week’s WM Phoenix Open. This is his third top-10 finish of the season, following 7th place at last October’s Shriners Children’s Open and a tie for 4th at last month’s Farmers Insurance Open. Local experts are also paying attention to Im. CBS and Sports Edge in the U.S. ranked him 9th in winning probability, higher than Collin Morikawa, Will Zalatoris, Cameron Young (all USA), and Viktor Hovland (Norway).

In addition to Sungjae Im, ranked 18th in the world, Korea has five more players. They include Kim Joo-hyung (world No. 15), Siwoo Kim, winner of the Sony Open, Kyung-hoon Lee, and rookie Sung Hyun Kim. Kim Young-soo, who won last year’s KPGA Korean Tour Genesis Championship, also received an invitation. Defending champion Joaquin Niemann (Chile) will not participate as he has joined LIV Golf.
