Busan Gijang-gun Opposes 'Nuclear Power Plant Dry Storage Facility 추진 Without Resident Consent'
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] Busan Gijang-gun announced its official position on the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) board agenda titled ‘Basic Plan for Construction of Dry Storage Facility for Spent Nuclear Fuel within the Gori Nuclear Power Plant Site,’ scheduled for 2 PM on the 7th.
Jung Jong-bok, the head of Gijang-gun, stated in a press release, “We oppose the promotion of the construction of a dry storage facility for spent nuclear fuel within the Gori Nuclear Power Plant site without transparent information disclosure and resident consent procedures.”
He further urged, “The construction should proceed only after the enactment of the High-Level Radioactive Waste Special Act as a clear legal basis for the dry storage facility, and the law must include provisions explicitly prohibiting permanent storage within the site and specifying a temporary period for the operation of the dry storage facility.”

Mayor Jung emphasized, “The government must demonstrate a strong and symbolic commitment to overcoming the spent nuclear fuel issue that has remained unresolved for the past 40 years through the enactment of the Special Act.”
KHNP anticipates that the spent nuclear fuel storage pools at the Gori Nuclear Power Plant will be full around 2031, and is currently promoting a plan to build a dry storage facility on-site to operate until an interim storage facility or permanent disposal facility is established.
