Former Basketball Coach Kang Dong-hee Indicted on Embezzlement Charges Amounting to 100 Million Won
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Former professional basketball coach Kang Dong-hee has been brought to trial on charges of embezzling operating funds worth around 100 million won while working as the director of a famous basketball academy.
According to the legal community on the 6th, the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office recently indicted Kang and four other corporate officials of the basketball academy without detention on charges of embezzlement and breach of trust in the course of their duties.
They are accused of personally using or diverting operating funds worth about 100 million won for purposes other than originally intended while jointly managing the basketball academy corporation, where Kang served as director, from May to October 2018. Earlier, the police received a related complaint in March 2021 and conducted an investigation by analyzing the corporation's financial transactions and cash flow. In October of the same year, Kang and others were sent to the prosecution.
Additionally, in January last year, the police received another complaint alleging that Kang embezzled 220 million won of corporate funds from another basketball academy and have been investigating to verify the facts.

Kang, who was a dominant professional basketball star during his playing days, was sentenced to 10 months in prison in 2013 for match-fixing by accepting 47 million won from brokers and substituting starting players with reserve players.
