President Yoon Appoints Lawyer Kim Yong-won as Standing Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission
[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] Kim Yong-won, the representative lawyer of Busan Port Law Office, has been appointed as a standing commissioner (vice minister level) of the National Human Rights Commission.
On the 3rd, President Yoon Suk-yeol made this appointment, according to the spokesperson's office. Kim, the newly appointed standing commissioner, graduated from Seoul National University Law School and earned a Master of Laws degree from the University of Michigan in the United States. He served as a military legal officer, prosecutor at Seoul District Prosecutors' Office, Busan District Prosecutors' Office, and Suwon District Prosecutors' Office, and later as an advisor to the Busan Regional Headquarters of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions and as a public interest commissioner of the Busan Labor Relations Commission. During his time as a prosecutor, he was also in charge of the Brothers Home incident.

The term of office for a standing commissioner of the Human Rights Commission is three years. The Human Rights Commission Candidate Recommendation Committee narrowed down the candidates to three times the number through public recruitment, document screening, and interviews. The term of former standing commissioner Park Chan-woon expired on the 12th of last month.
President Yoon Suk-yeol appointed Kim Yong-won, the chief attorney of Busan Port Law Office, as a standing member of the National Human Rights Commission on the 3rd.
