Site Selection Committee to Decide Candidate Locations in the First Half of the Year

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced on the 17th that it formed the 'Suncheon City Waste Treatment Facility Site Selection Committee' on the 13th to establish a new waste treatment facility.

The Suncheon City Waste Treatment Facility Site Selection Committee consists of a total of 11 members, including resident representatives, experts, and city council members. On the same day, the committee held its appointment ceremony and the 1st meeting, officially launching the committee.

According to the 'Act on Promotion of Installation of Waste Treatment Facilities and Support for Surrounding Areas,' the site selection committee is required to follow legal procedures such as conducting feasibility studies on candidate sites, holding public hearings and explanatory meetings, and appointing a chairperson for site selection.

Additionally, to ensure objective and quantitative evaluations, the committee establishes objective evaluation criteria and transparently discloses the investigation process and results to residents once the feasibility study of candidate sites is completed.

The city plans to conduct a feasibility study on candidate sites next month through the independent site selection committee and select one optimal candidate site within the first half of this year, aiming to complete the facility by 2029.

A Suncheon City official stated, "We expect the site selection committee to select the optimal site through a fair process to prepare smoothly for the ban on direct landfill by 2030 and to resolve the pressing public issue of processing household waste generated by all citizens."
