89-Year-Old Father Dies in Son's Hands on Wife's Funeral Day
"Ignore Words, Sell Land, Even Little Support for Mother" Resentment
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] A man in his 50s was sentenced to 30 years in prison for assaulting and causing the death of his elderly father on his mother's funeral day.
The Criminal Division 6 of Busan District Court (Chief Judge Kim Tae-eop) announced on the 17th that it sentenced Mr. A, who was charged with parricide and child abuse (violation of the Child Welfare Act), to 30 years in prison.
According to the Busan District Court, Mr. A was tried on charges of assaulting and killing his father on June 25 of last year. Mr. A was displeased because his father, Mr. B (89), ignored his opinion and sold real estate, the market price of which rose afterward.
Then, on June 24 of last year, after drinking at his mother's funeral, he went to his father's house and slapped his father's cheek twice, saying, "The condolence money was not much, and you ignored my opinion and sold the real estate."
At around 1:07 a.m. the next day, unable to contain his anger, Mr. A assaulted Mr. B's face and body for two hours with his father's cane and other objects. Mr. B eventually died from multiple injuries.
Mr. A was also indicted on charges of abusing his stepson. On June 3 of last year, at 9:53 a.m. at a house in Gijang-gun, he hit his stepson's head three times with a toy sponge bat, complaining that the stepson did not take his side. On the same day at around 6:30 p.m., intoxicated at a bus stop, he hit his stepson's head multiple times.

The court stated, "The victim was a frail 89-year-old man who tragically faced a brutal death at the hands of his own son while defenseless," and added, "The merciless traces of violence left on the victim's body are horrific beyond measure, and the extreme mental and physical suffering felt by the victim who ended his life at his son's hands is unimaginable."
